Your chosen family can include anyone who loves and supports you for who you are!

A chosen family is exactly what it sounds like: family who you choose! At its core, a chosen family is made up of people who love, see, and support you for being your truest self. There are lots of people who can be a part of your chosen family, and you get to pick who makes you feel the safest and bravest.

Madi Bourdon (she/they) is a Portland-based educator and activist dedicated to supporting the well-being of youth through inclusive spaces, mentorship, and empowerment, to aid in the development of a healthy sense of belonging for all kids. Family Isn't Limited to Blood Relations

This book beautifully introduces the concept of chosen family in a way that resonates across all backgrounds. By exploring the idea that family isn't limited to blood relations, it validates the experiences of so many children—whether they're being raised by grandparents, living with close family friends, navigating blended families, or finding belonging in their community. The book shows young readers that love and connection can take many forms, which is both comforting and empowering.

What makes this an excellent starting point for kids is its simplicity without being reductive. It opens conversations about belonging and identity while showing that chosen family is just as real and meaningful as any other kind. For young readers who might feel like their family structure doesn't fit the traditional mold, this book offers validation. For others, it builds empathy and understanding. It's the kind of foundation that helps children see the world—and their place in it—more fully.

A needed book for all ages!

Such a sweet, accessible books that should be in every school library! Our culture is so focused on individualism and nuclear family units, and it was refreshing to read a kid’s book that focused on love, community and the idea that you can find your people anywhere. Thank you for writing this Madi!

Must read!

A beautifully written book which highlights such an important and meaningful topic, especially for those within the queer community who have historically been reliant on members of their chosen family.
A Kid’s Book About Chosen Family allows readers to explore the spectrum of what family and a strong support system can look like. The interactive portion of this book allows kids (and adults!) a chance to understand the importance of meaningful connections, and identify those in their life that support all parts of themselves. Highly recommended!!

A Gem!

With vibrant illustrations/word art and clear language, this book navigates the complex concept of chosen family with grace and authenticity. This gem highlights the importance of belonging and being loved and seen for who you are. One of the best parts of the book is the ten interactive questions that help identify people in our lives who make us feel the most like us!
