An open conversation on gender and how to explore your own.

Gender can be difficult to define, but it’s something that's a part of all of us and who we are. This book isn’t meant to answer all the questions or tell you how you identify. It’s meant to help kids and grownups understand gender and create an open and safe environment for kids to question, experiment, and discover their authentic selves.

Dale Mueller (they/them) is a lifetime learner, sex educator, and mental healthcare enthusiast based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. They integrate their focus on trans advocacy, inclusion, and queer community building in all they do professionally, personally, and in their journey to become a therapist.

Open mind

The idea of a gender identity outside the definition of “just being yourself” is clearly too complicated for children under a certain age. I got this book to see how it would explain gender to my child. I learned quickly that simply doing something “girly” clearly does not make you a girl, and doing something “a boy would do” certainly does not make you a boy.

You can buy your daughter a truck, or your son ballerina shoes and allow them to be themselves without forcing an idea of gender on them.

My child is 7. Too young for anyone else curious.

Should a 12 year old be allowed to get a face tattoo? Now ask the next question.

Well done, but similar to non-binary book

This is a well done book, but I purchased both this one and the non-binary one and they were very similar. Just be aware that you can really just buy one of the them because they both mostly focus on the idea of gender fluidity & what non-binary means. I was really hoping this one took more time to cover everything else more. Like I said, they are both worth buying, just not together.

Educator

WOW! This is the kind of resource I was searching for. I am an elementary school teacher working to queer my curriculum. This book articulates concepts about gender and the fluidity and fluctuation gender can take for some trans and gender non-conforming folks. Particularly when working with young ones, engaging in conversations about identity, intersectionality, comfort levels rooted in their physical body, and what they notice about the culture and social expectations around them is HUGE. I love this book and I can't wait to share it with my coworkers and friends. STRONGLY recommend.
